Bundestag Approves €1 Billion for Additional Aircraft

German Air Force to Enhance Capabilities with Advanced Technology

BERLIN, June 5, 2024 – Germany has announced plans to order an additional 20 Eurofighter aircraft, bolstering its air combat capabilities. The decision follows approval from the Bundestag's Haushaltsausschuss (Budget Committee) to allocate €1 billion for the procurement.

"This acquisition represents a significant investment in the modernization of our air force," said Bundeswehr Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz, Inspector of the Air Force. "The Eurofighter is a versatile and highly capable system that will enhance our ability to protect German airspace and support our international commitments."

The new aircraft will be equipped with the latest electronic warfare systems and air-to-air missiles, providing the German Air Force with a significant advantage in future conflicts. They will also be capable of carrying out a range of missions, including air-to-ground strikes, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare operations.

"We are committed to ensuring that our armed forces have the resources they need to carry out their missions effectively," said German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht. "The Eurofighter order demonstrates our continued investment in modernizing the Bundeswehr and maintaining our position as a leading contributor to NATO's collective defense."

The Eurofighter aircraft will be supplied by Airbus Defense and Space. The company has previously delivered 15 Eurofighters to the German Air Force, which have been deployed in missions over the Baltics and the Mediterranean Sea.

The acquisition of these additional aircraft is part of a broader modernization effort by the Bundeswehr. The government has pledged to invest heavily in new equipment and technologies to enhance the military's operational capabilities. This includes plans to order the F-35 fighter jet and a new generation of submarines.
